“This book is a classic account of the clock styles and types made in England from the late seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries.  Long out of print and a collector’s item, it is now republished by Spring Books in an edition in which text and illustrations differ from the original in only two minor amendments.  [This book] traces the metamorphosis of the brass lantern or ‘Cromwellian’ clock into the long-case pendulum clock on the one hand and the spring-driven ‘table clock’ on the other.  The text, combining detailed understanding of clock mechanisms with a wide knowledge of the documentary history of clock-making and its changing styles, is richly informative, and the 207 illustrations cover a comprehensive range of English-made clocks.  The author’s description of the law of the pendulum, introduced into English clock-making in about 1660, is brilliantly clear and concise, and their detailed drawings of clock mechanisms are invaluable.  They enter the domain of the brass finisher to discuss the development of spandrel-corners on dials, and the realm of the fashionable designer to describe the influence of the styles of Chippendale and Sheraton.  Mural and cartel clocks, lacquered long-case clocks, bracket clocks, and the changing patterns of clock hands are other subjects discussed in this book.”
