    MEASUREMENT OF TIME
    17th CENTURY  SAND GLASS
THE This consists of two glass-bulbs connected by a  neck, and measures a  prearranged
period by  the falling of fine sand  from the upper into the  lower bulb. Clepsammia,  as they
are called by  several writers, is  ascribed to Luitprand, a  monk of Chartres, who  at the end
of the eighth  century resuscitated the  art of blowing glass. A  Sand Glass is used in the
House of Commons to  this day; and in recent  times it was often used by  the preacher in the
    pulpit.
