7 of family die as car falls into canal in Haryana

Seven people, including three women, died in Haryana’s Kaithal on Saturday. The incident took place around 10 am when the driver lost control of the car, and it plunged into the Mundri canal.
The family was travelling from Deeg to Kaithal to attend a religious ceremony at the Guru Ravidas Temple in Guhna. The car was carrying nine people, including three children and three women, when the accident happened.
The 45-year-old driver, Karamjit Singh, survived the accident but is in a criticial condition and is receiving treatment for his injuries at the hospital.
“I can’t believe this happened to my family. We were just going to celebrate,” said Baljeet Singh Bhukkal, a relative of the victims.
The victims include Darshana Karamjit (40), Sukhvinder Praveen (28), Chamelei Jil Singh (65), Fiza Karamjit (19), Vandana Karamjit (14), Riya Praveen (12), and Navneet Praveen (8). A 14-year-old girl remains missing, prompting ongoing search efforts by local authorities.
Expressing grief over the mishap, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of each victim, along with Rs 50,000 for the injured.
Senior police officer Lalit Kumar stated that rescue operations are underway at the site and urged locals to remain vigilant.
